Sister Locations to the Biergarten

It's curious how many times a customer seems intrigued about our menu and our staff.  As if they had either been here before or as if this setting seemed familiar to them.  It so happens that our family owns and operates several other locations and in which some similarities and differences can be found.

For starters, they notice that we offer a special kind of glassware for our draft beers known as the DAS Boot. A popular German drinking vessel designed in the shaped of a high boot which was popularized by an American Movie called “Beer Fest.” This unique beer cup is available at all of our locations and in our last batch we added the names of all locations and the total number of draft beers that we offer in each one of them. Here at the Los Angeles Biergarten we also decided to add the traditional Glass Liter Steins as another option for your drinking enjoyment. Over the years, our social media mentions across all platforms usually involve a mention of our popular DAS Boot been enjoyed by our customers.

Another similarity that many customers find is the very popular Appetizer Sampler Platter. Since day one when we opened our doors at the Downey Brewing Company, we have always offered this platter and have never changed any item on it. (4) Chicken Wings, usually tossed with Buffalo Sauce, (4) Mozzarella Cheese Sticks, (3) Chicken Tender Strips, (2) Beef Sliders, Steak Cut Fries, and Onion Rings. All this food is served on a large platter accompanied with Marinara Sauce, Ranch, and plenty of Ketchup. You can order this same sampler at any of our locations and most groups enjoy the many selections offered at a very reasonable price.

Our sister locations are as follows: Downey Brewing Company founded in 2008 and the flagship location for our family. Located in the city of Downey, California it is considered a historic building as it was built as an “A Frame” and was home to the predecessor to IHOP which operated under the name of “Copper Penny Cafe.” This location offers 64 Beers on Tap and maintains plenty of decor from the original design- 2 fireplaces on each side of the building, original booths on one side of the restaurant, the original wood wall featuring cut outs of different sizes of trees, the original exhaust system, and the original refrigeration system that features 12 tall doors for the many kegs that we keep inside.

Quick Recap of our Massive Draft Beer Shake Up for 2019

As the new year came into play we decided to make some daring changes to our draft beer lineup. We realized that many customers enjoy having their favorite beer on tap at all times, but others also revel in the opportunity to savor new beers.

Remaining on our Permanent Draft List are fan favorites like:

Allagash White from Allagash Brewing
Great White from Lost Coast Brewing
White Rascal from Avery Brewing
Aurora Hoppyallis IPA from Karl Strauss Brewing
Iron Triangle Dark Ale from our friends at Iron Triangle Brewing Co in DTLA
Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Milk Stout from Belching Beaver Brewing

To make room for new beers we had to bid goodbye (for the meantime) to the following:
Old Rasputin Imperial Stout on Nitro from North Coast Brewing
Boddingtons Pub Ale from Boddingtons via England
The Abyss from Deschutes Brewery (actually we ran out and won’t receive another keg until late 2019)
St Bernardus ABT 12 Quadrupel from St Bernardus via Belgium
Bohemia Pilsner from Moctezuma Beer via Mexico

New Beers that grace our tap lineup in 2019
2018 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. Yes, we were fortunate to receive a small keg.
So Happens It’s Tuesday from the Bruery an awesome Imperial Stout
120 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head Brewing, super delicious and super rare at 18% abv
Warsteiner Dunkel from Warsteiner Brewery out of Germany
Arts District McCasey Irish Stout from our neighbors from Arts District Brewing Co. in DTLA
Old Rasputin XIX Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout- trust us… super delicious and rare to find.

Our next draft beer rotation will take place in early April.
Stay tuned for more details.

100 Beers on Tap- No Kidding!

Many visitors the the Los Angeles Biergarten often ask us about the exact number of draft beers that we offer.  Our answer, since day one, has been the same- 100 Different Beers.

We might add that it's a very difficult task to maintain, update, and keep track of all beers and their freshness, but it's a task we enjoy working on each and every week.

Our current beer list as of April 15th

You can say we are a bit passionate about offering as many beer selections from as many breweries as possible.  Our Bottled Beer Selections are currently at 41 which can make selecting a beer a bit difficult.

Wasn't this another business?

We often get this question in a variety of ways... and we always love to share information on this subject.

We came to occupy part of the west side floor lever of the Chapman Buidling that once was occupied by the Los Angeles Brewing Company aka LA Brew Co.  For many years, patrons came to partake of the many beer selections and entertainment that was offered by the LA Brew Co. But, like many businesses that run their cycle this one did as well and they moved on.

Customers will find somewhat similar settings that remind them of previous visits but as we work behind the scenes they will also notice significant changes.

Quick History on the historic Chapman Building

Historian 4 Hire ... Charles J. Fisher

Found this nice article that mentions the early history of the Chapman Building, written by Mr. Charles J. Fisher.
Historical Monument #899

We thought it would be nice to share pictures from inside the restaurant but also from inside and on-top of the Chapman Building.
